Biography:

Dr. Cristy Gelling has been writing for SPLASH!® Milk Science Update since 2022. She is a freelance writer and editor based in Aotearoa New Zealand. She trained in biology and spent a decade working as a yeast genetics researcher, first as a PhD student in Sydney, Australia, and then as a postdoctoral fellow in Pittsburgh, United States. She then retrained as a science journalist, getting an MA in Professional Writing and interning at Science News and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She recently returned to writing and reporting after spending five years as the Communications Director for the Genetics Society of America. Her reporting has been published in The Washington Post, Science News, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Science News for Students, Knowable, Bitesize Bio, Scientific American Blogs, BioNews, and ASBMB Today. Her writing awards include the NESCent Evolution Blog Contest, the Carnegie Mellon University Magazine Writing Award, and the Editor’s Choice Award in the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Poetry Contest (yes, really).
